How is your organization creatively moving LA forward?

The Learning Garden is dedicated to connecting people to the earth and nature by restoring the knowledge of plants to the people by teaching how to organically grow, harvest, and use plants for food, medicine and traditional arts and living. Currently, the garden offers gardening, art and tai chi classes to the community and serves as an outdoor classroom to Venice High school students, UCLA extension, and local traditional chinese medicine schools. It is home to the Seed Library of Los Angeles, a seed repository of open pollinated seeds, educating the LA community about preserving the genetic diversity of edible plants and increasing food security for our fair city. All abundance of food grown is shared with the food banks of the city.

Why does your organization need this fundraiser event?

We are excited to introduce a new project – The Natural Arts Garden—a garden dedicated solely to plants used in traditional arts and crafts including dyeing, weaving, basketry, painting, and other natural art techniques. The Natural Arts Garden will be the home to classes for students from Kindergarten to High School, and will not only provide a space for creative arts which has been sorely missing in our schools, but also a space for students to connect with nature and our environment.

I am a Visual Artist and Teaching Artist in local schools and community. I would love to be involved in this project because I have been interested in "Garden Art" and the outdoor classroom for many years. I am also always looking for venues for teaching art, sculpture and ceramics. I am constantly asked by prospective students for art instruction, both adults and children. It would be wonderful to have the Learning Garden as an inspiration for student art. One of my ideas is to do a group art project of a ceramic tile mural inspired by garden plants. I am a provider for the LA Arts Commission's Arts for All Programs for Schools online Roster of Programs which has funding possibilities available. I also love working with under served and at risk students of all ages. Another area of interest to me is the concept of Recyclable Art. I love creating art curriculum that utilizes recycled materials. I think this would be a wonderful addition to the educational value of the Learning Garden so that students would become aware of the overuse of product packaging and our "throw away culture". They would have the opportunity to see new uses of materials to visually enhance their environment while using materials that they would normally throw in the trash. I would love to connect with anyone who is interested in my ideas! Cindy Iles-Nelson, ilesnelsonarts@gmail.com

Urban Ag hoods a vital place in moving cities to become a more livable space. The Learning Garden is one of the formost examples of how that can be accomplished in Los Angeles. And LA is has been showing the world how to live since television. We all need more of this community based education.

The Learning Garden is a special environment that blooms on many levels. It is an oasis of beauty and life in the throng of the city, It has engendered a community of old and young, healers, teachers, students aside another very giving community, the of plants, trees and other living things that feed, heal and nourish the soul as well as the body. All of this from dirt, love, and intentions realized. Hats off to you at the Learning Garden for opening a the bounty of nature to our young folks. How cool is that!

This is inspiring - every part of it - the plants - food, flower, herb, remedy - all coming the from soil of a local school, tending not just by adults but the students who grow as well. This is something very special and it's up to all of us not to make it rare! Kristin Kreiger

In a city reputed to be so spread out and anonymous, places like the Learning Garden prove that neighborhoods can cohere and provide a true sense of community. This garden is a hub of activity for many people and grassroots organizations that work to improve urban life -- and life in general!

The Learning Garden reaches out to the communities near the school and the greater Los Angeles area.l The Learning Garden Master lectures and promotes community gardens, seed saving and many other timely and meaningful endeavors to raise the awareness of the quality of life and food. There is never enough money to go around to meet the many needs of the incredible endeavor. Please help promote this experience for the community and others.
