How is your organization creatively moving LA forward?

Break the Cycle is dedicated to our mission of ending teen dating violence. We believe that everyone has the right to safe and healthy relationships regardless of where they live, who they are or what they believe. Break the Cycle educates and empowers youth ages 12 to 24 in preventing dating abuse in their lives and communities. Through youth activism, we mobilize teens to raise awareness of dating violence and its impact; transforming youth into prevention advocates and leaders against domestic violence. Annually, our programs and public awareness campaigns reach one million youth nationwide. Our information, advice, direct services and referrals have helped countless teens diagnose and escape abusive relationships.

Why does your organization need this fundraiser event?

The issue of teen dating violence is often overlooked when in fact dating abuse is known to begin as early as middle school. Studies consistently find that one in three teenagers report experiencing physical or emotional abuse in their relationships.Break the Cycle provides a critical service in the community; educating young people on how to escape abusive relationships and lead non-violent lives. Break the Cycle seeks your support, so that we can continue to raise awareness about this issue.

I work with Casa de la Familia and we provide mental health services to victims of crime and a large part of the population we serve are victims of domestic violence, many of them children and teens. I totally agree with Breaking the Silence mission. I also agree that the more prevention and education done for this population the better the outcomes will be as many victims of domestic violence do become perpetrators as adults.
